Our Philosophy
The Body Adapts. The Direction Matters.
Every body is constantly adapting to the demands placed upon it—through movement, work, training, stress, injury, and recovery.
Some adaptations help us become stronger, more capable, and more resilient. Others may contribute to tension, restricted movement, or discomfort.
At Momentum, we believe understanding those adaptations is an important starting point. Rather than simply focusing on where you feel discomfort, we explore the bigger picture to help guide purposeful decisions about hands-on work, movement, and recovery.
The goal isn't just to create change. It's to give change direction.
The Education
What Shapes Your Adaptations?
Your body responds to more than exercise. The demands of everyday life, past experiences, and recovery habits all play a role in how you move and feel.
Work & Posture
Repetitive positions, occupational demands, and daily habits.
Injury & Health History
Past injuries, surgeries, and physical experiences.
Training & Activity
Exercise, sports, physical challenges, and periods of inactivity.
Movement & Daily Demands
How you lift, reach, carry, bend, and move through life.
Stress & Habits
How stress, routines, and habitual muscle tension may influence comfort.
Sleep & Recovery
Rest, recovery opportunities, and the body's response to physical demands.
Your body has a history. Your movement reflects it.
Understanding Before Treatment
Where It Hurts Is Only Part of the Story.
In a traditional massage appointment, the conversation may be brief: Where does it hurt? How much pressure would you like? Are there any areas to avoid?
Those questions matter, but at Momentum, I believe there's more to understand before deciding how to approach the session.
I want to know more than what hurts. I want to understand how it affects your life.
When did it begin? What makes it worse or better? Does it happen during certain movements or activities? Can we safely identify the movement or position that brings on your familiar discomfort? What have you already tried?
Just as importantly, what is that discomfort preventing you from doing? Is it affecting your sleep, your work, your workouts, or something as simple as getting out of a chair or playing with your kids?
Understanding your history, symptoms, daily demands, and functional limitations helps us establish realistic expectations and choose an appropriate approach together.
The goal isn't simply to address discomfort.
It's to understand what you want to get back to doing.
A Different Way of Asking Questions
It's Not Just "My Back Hurts."
Understanding the details helps us decide where to begin.
Onset & History
When did it start? Was it sudden or gradual? Has it happened before?
Symptoms & Patterns
What does it feel like? Is it constant or intermittent? What makes it better or worse?
Movement & Function
Does bending, twisting, lifting, sitting, or standing reproduce the discomfort? What activities are becoming difficult?
Contributing Factors
What does your workday look like? How are your sleep, stress, activity, and recovery?
Previous Approaches
What have you tried? What helped? What didn't? Have you had an evaluation or been given restrictions?
Goals & Expectations
What would you like to be able to do more comfortably? What would make today's session worthwhile?
